Sweet 16 party gives back to Harbor House

charitable donation

Three Pittsford Sutherland High School students raised more than $1,000 for charity at their sweet 16 birthday party.

Abbey Leonardi, Maggie Doran and Maddie Thomas all turned 16 in May. When they celebrated their birthdays at Max Rochester in the High Falls District on Saturday they asked the 85 guests to make a donation to Harbor House of Rochester instead of giving them presents.

So far they’ve raised $ 1,475, but all the cards haven’t been opened, said Doran.

"We didn’t really need presents. We have been given so much. We just wanted to give back to Harbor House," she said.

Harbor House, located at 89 Rossiter Road provides temporary accommodations and other assistance to patients and their families during major medical events and emergencies.

Harbor House Volunteers Recognized

charitable donation

Rochester, N.Y. -- A home away from home for critical patients and their families, Harbor House relies on volunteers. Thursday, those volunteers were recognized.

Mass Mutual presented a check for $10,000 to Harbor House Thursday night. Its employees volunteer at the house on Wednesday nights.

Harbor House was built, in part, because of Gary Acker, who had a heart transplant 10 years ago out of state.

He says that transplant has allowed him to watch his grandson grow up. Now he helps other families going through a similar ordeal.

It's a small community, but I think that one of the things the transplant community does is they try to give back," Acker said. "Because they know we got the ultimate gift of life and the opportunity to be with our families a few more years."

The Harbor House opened last year.
